Goal
The goal of this course is first to study, analyze, and critique modern concepts of manufacturing systems. The perspective taken is that of the chief engineer. The problems discussed are in areas of implementation and measurement. As a secondary goal, this course aims to develop the student's ability to communicate critical analysis.

Grading
There are two segments to the grading of the student in this course. First, there are four papers discussing topics from modules in the course. Each of these is worth 30 points. These papers should be from 3 to 8 pages in length and contain references from the reading list as well as others found by the student. Style, grammar, syntax, as well as content will be graded.

Second, a semester paper is to be written which will include a short (5-10 minute) presentation.  This paper should be on a topic from the course of the student's choice. A written proposal for the paper is due as shown in the timing section of this syllabus.  This paper should be a significant addition to the topic beyond class discussion and readings. While the paper may (should) contain the student's opinions on the topic, these opinions should be grounded in fact (experimental or referenced) and self-critiqued. The written portion of this paper is worth 60 points and the oral presentation is worth 20.

While attendance is not taken in this course, participation is part of the discussion nature of the class. Lack of participation will reflect in the production of weak papers.

In general grades will be 90-80-70-60 against the 200 possible points. Some allowance for subjectivity may be made. History shows 55% As, 40% Bs and 5% Cs in this course.

General
The schedule and procedures in this syllabus are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances. Any student with difficulty in meeting any requirement should contact the instructor as soon as possible for an attempt to resolve the difficulty.

All students are expected to have met the prerequisites for this course prior to registering. If you have not, contact the instructor or your advisor immediately.
