GRADING
Homework (20 problems) will count 5 points each; the problems from chapter
8 will count 10 points each. The
hand simulation exercise will count 10. The four ProModel exercises
will count 5 points each. The mid-term tests will count for 50 points
each and the final will also count for 100 (split 50 take-home and 50 in-class.)
Grading will be 90-80-70-60 with some slight allowance possible due to
the subjectivity of some of the grading. The history of grades for
this class has been approximately 33% A, 20% B, 33% C, and 14% D/ F.
Code should be commented.
Note that assignments from problem 4.20 on and the hand simulation require
a report (an explanation) to be
included--not just printout or numbers. The ProModel exercises require
a report and a diskette (which will be
returned) or a program set to be attached to an e-mail of a report.
All assignments may be included as e-mail
attachments if mailed by the due date and time.
GOAL
The major goal of this course is to introduce the student to techniques
of discrete event simulation including both
the modeling aspects and the statistical analysis and design of such problems.
Secondary goals are usage of
experimental design, system abstraction, and presentation techniques including
an introduction to animation using
an advanced graphical simulator.
GENERAL
The 1.2 MB diskette included with the text has sufficient software for
most work in this course. Full GPSS/PC is available on certain machines
in the IMET labs; if needed contact the lab technician. Quattro Pro,
MatLab, and Minitab are available in the IMET lab. RS/1 is available
on the Sun work stations. Students are expected to understand the
operation of PCs as well as spreadsheets and file structures PRIOR to taking
this course. (Note that the 1.2 MB diskette is permanently write
protected; adjust your file structure accordingly. You will have
most success by copying the files to a 3.5" diskette and using these files.)
Various settings on the GPSS files need to be reset to use SVGA scxreens.
ProModel is available via the WindowsNT machines in Morgan 109 and 307.
The above schedule and procedures are subject to change in the event of
extenuating circumstances. Any student with difficulty in meeting
these requirements should contact the instructor as soon as possible for
an attempt to resolve the difficulty.
All students are expected to have met the pre-requisites for this course
prior to registering. If you have not, contact the instructor or
your advisor immediately. Note that the current pre-requisites are
Math 202 (or IME 117) and IE 311.
